I haven't always been a big fan of black eyeliner; I used to think it was too harsh for my skin tone. Then, years later, I tried it again and to my surprise, it really made my eyes pop. I'm betting you have makeup misconceptions, too.
1. Blush looks clownish
How to Face It: Get a new brush.
When you wind up looking like Bozo, blame your brush, not your blush. Chances are you're using the tiny makeup brush that came stashed inside the compact. It's made with small, harsh bristles that result in hard-to-blend streaks running across your face. Instead, invest in a medium-size brush with slightly angled bristles; it helps the color swipe on softly and evenly for a more natural effect.

2. Cosmetics are too pricey
How to Face It: Splurge sparingly.
Because trends come and go, stock shadow, liner, and gloss from the drugstore. You can find high-quality low-budget brands with luxe textures and a range of colors. Splurge on high-end foundation, powder, and concealer, which are sheerer and silkier, like a second coat of skin. Although you pay more, a little goes a long way, so your dollar stretches.
Foolproof Finds: Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara ($6, drugstores) or E.L.F. Soothing Lip Gloss ($1; Target)
3. Makeup is a time-buster
How to Face It: Streamline your routine.
To achieve a fresh-faced look, all you need are a few essentials and 5 minutes. After moisturizing your skin, follow this guide:
- 1:00 Using a concealer brush with a tapered tip, or your fingertip, apply concealer under eyes to camouflage darkness.
- 2:00 Dot and blend tinted moisturizer or foundation around your nose and mouth to even out your skin tone.
- 3:00 Apply a blush or bronzer.
- 4:00 Add a dash of color to lips with a sheer, pinky-brown gloss or lipstick.
- 5:00 Make eyes stand out with a swipe of black mascara.
How to Face It: Choose the right texture.
When picked correctly, shadow softens the appearance of pesky lines. Stick with powders, which won't creep into crevices. Steer clear of creamy and light-reflective ones; their oil base builds up on lids and draws attention to lines. For extra staying power, prep lids with a dusting of loose, yellow-toned face powder.
Foolproof Finds: Revlon ColorStay 12 Hour Eye Shadow Quad ($7; drugstores) or Bourjois Ombre á Paupiéres Eyeshadow ($13.50; Sephora)
5. Makeup looks too done up
How to Face It: Lighten up.
Stick with lightweight formulas, such as a wash or tint, that allow your skin to show through. And choose colors that mimic your natural skin tone. Apply with a light hand: Dab concealer and base only where needed; use your fingers to blot lipstick on lips for a stained effect; and apply gloss just on your lower lip, then smudge with upper lip to distribute evenly.
Foolproof Finds: Aveda Lip Tint SPF 15 ($11; Aveda) or Neutrogena Mineral Sheers for Eyes ($8; drugstores)
6. I'll break out
How to Face It: Update your products.
Not only are today's cosmetics "noncomedogenic" (meaning they won't clog pores), many are loaded with good-for-you ingredients. For instance, lipsticks contain vitamin E for added hydration, foundations pack built-in SPF to protect skin from damaging UV rays, and undereye concealers have vitamin A and aloe to help soften fine lines.
Foolproof Finds: Biotherm Smile Satin Moisturizing Lipstick ($12; Macy's) or Bare Escentuals BareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation ($25; 800-227-3390)
